The Best New Year's Eve Ever
We had the best New Year's Eve ever and we went to bed at 10:30. Probably emotionally exhausted from talking by phone with the mother of our first child!!!! Our attorney called and said that she would like to speak with us that very night. I will call her Jane for the sake of anonymity.
So after praying and shaking off the nerves, we called. At first we dialed the wrong number, talk about anti-climatic. Then we got the correct number and dialed again. Jane answered. The voice on the other end of the line belong to a person is about to make the most significant, most courageous life altering choice of her life and ours. She chose us to be the recipient of her selfless, sacrificial act of compassion and grace. Compassion for an unborn child who will live a better life and grace for this heartbroken couple who have longed for a child for too many years.
Jane is amazing and sweet and her voice was so familiar. Not in the sense that I know her but in a way, that makes me feel that Jane and I must have shared a womb. And in some sense we will.
Jane was articulate and kind. She seemed to be at peace with her decision and we could tell it contemplated for months, possibly even prayed about. She was excited for us and happy to know that we too were thrilled to have this blessing.
We will meet in person some time in the very near future. To see the face that may resemble that of our first child's face will be amazing. Amazing is much too small a word to adequately describe that moment.
